The story goes that 2,500 years ago, the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates made a broth after which the sick literally got out of bed. He designed it so that it strengthens immunity and rids the body of various poisons, so it has been known for centuries how good it is for our body.
An ideal combination of vegetables
The secret of this very effective broth, which was made famous by the German doctor Max Gerson in the 1930s, lies in the ideal combination of vegetables. This very choice protects us from toxins because with this dish we get rid of them, our immunity is strengthened, so we are more resistant to various ailments.
Black onion is rich in vitamin C and selenium and activates the immune system, garlic, which is said to be a natural antibiotic, is good for various inflammations, high blood pressure, problems with rheumatism, heart, and liver. Both tomatoes, which have a lot of lycopene, and potatoes from Hippocrates’ broth also strengthen immunity. This broth is also rich in potassium, and on the other hand, there is no salt, i.e. of sodium. In addition, the good thing is that it is prepared quickly and easily, and you probably already have almost all the ingredients in the kitchen.
Ingredients:
- 1 medium parsley root
- 1 medium celery root
- 2 medium onions
- 5 cloves of garlic
- 1 large leek
- a little parsley leaf
- 400 g of potatoes
- 600 g of tomatoes
if desired, bay leaf, sage, thyme, saffron, coriander, capers, cumin, fennel, nutmeg, rosemary (do not add other spices to the broth so as not to nullify the medicinal effect)
Preparation:
Cut the washed vegetables into cubes, transfer them to a larger pot, just make sure that it is not made of aluminum. Pour water over it to soak. Put it on high heat until it starts to boil, then cook on low heat for about two hours, until the vegetables are soft.
It is important not to add water while the stew is cooking and to keep the pot covered. When it’s almost done, add the garlic and season. At the end, you can mash the broth if you prefer cream broths.
It is best to take one to two plates a day. You can keep it in the fridge for a maximum of 48 hours. Also, Hippocrates broth should not be heated, but before eating, take it out to room temperature for about 30 minutes.
